Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani will soon be called M.K. Veeramani, or Mee. Ki. Veeramani in Tamil.
Don’t jump to any conclusion that the die-hard atheist is suddenly turning to numerology or some pseudo-science. For him, it is for a progressive cause.
Veeramani declared on Saturday, 6th September at the end of the DK’s women’s wing conference, which called for legislation to mandate the use of one’s mother’s name ahead of the father’s name as one’s initials, that he would be the first one to follow it.
“I will notify the addition in my initials soon. In my name, I will have my mother Meenakshi’s name first, and then my father Krishnasamy’s” the 75-year-old Veeramani said.
The conference also called for an amendment in the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act to ensure that women enjoy the sole right to give birth to a child. It stressed that the woman should have complete autonomy over her body.
Expressing concern over the declining female sex ratio, it called for capital punishment for those committing female infanticide. It appealed for an end to the practice of women piercing their ears and noses, as a step to arrest the craze for jewelry. It also asked policewomen to lead by not wearing ornaments.
