Caste-wise Census

Preliminary consultations took place at a meeting held under the Chairmanship of Shiv Raj Patil, the Central Home Minister, on 21st May, about the decennial census operations to be held in 2011. Regarding caste-wise enumeration of the people, they have left the matter to be decided by the Union Government.

The Relevance of Darwin Day

Charles Darwin was born 199 years ago today (12 Feb. 1808), Darwin Day, on the same day as Abraham Lincoln. After his voyages on HMS Bea-gle (1831-36), following much deliberation, Darwin published his seminal book in 1859. The original title was On the Origin of Speci`es by Means of NaturalSelection; or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. A cumbersome title perhaps, which was shortened in the 1872 edition.
The life of Darwin, perhaps understandably, is not celebrated as much as Lincoln’s, which in the US is honoured with President’s Day. In Australia, however, we do honour Darwin with the name of a capital city. Palmerston was renamed Darwin in 1911 by Andrew Fisher, the flrst Labor Prime Minister.
